Practical notes for Windhoek

- Getting around
- The compact centre is walkable; taxis and app cars cover the city. Most visitors hire a car (often a 4x4) here to explore Namibia's vast distances — the country is a self-drive dream. Sossusvlei is a 4–5 hour drive southwest.
- Currency
- Namibian Dollar (N$)
- Language
- English (official); Afrikaans, Oshiwambo and German widely spoken.
- Timezone
- CAT (UTC+2)
- Current trends
- A distinctive German-African fusion food culture and excellent game meat; a small but growing craft-beer and coffee scene; the city firmly established as the self-drive safari hub; and rising eco- and desert-lodge tourism at Sossusvlei and beyond.
