Plaka — The old town beneath the Acropolis, a maze of narrow streets and white-washed buildings. Undeniably touristy but genuinely charming, particularly in the quieter reaches. One area you must visit, though living here would be overwhelming.
Kolonaki — Upmarket neighbourhood with designer shopping, high-end restaurants, and embassies. The Acropolis Museum is here. Less bohemian than Psyrri but more refined and genuinely functional.
Psyrri — Once-industrial neighbourhood that gentrified gradually and authentically. Street art, galleries, creative spaces, and neighbourhood restaurants now dominate. This is where contemporary Athens happens.
Gazi — Similar trajectory to Psyrri, built around a former gasworks (now a cultural venue). Museums, galleries, restaurants, and bars make this genuinely interesting. Less polished than Psyrri but equally vital.
