- O Thanasis Genuinely old-school Greek taverna serving food your grandmother would recognise. No pretence, genuine ingredients, honest cooking. The souvlaki is what Greek street food actually tastes like.
- Brettos Working distillery operating since 1909, now functioning as a bar. The interior is beautifully preserved, walls lined with coloured bottles of homemade spirits. Genuinely charming despite the location.

- April to May and September to October offer perfect weather without summer's oppressive heat. June to August temperatures soar and tourist crowds become suffocating. Winters are mild but can bring rain.
- Getting around
- Metro is efficient and covers major sites. Walking is the default for neighbourhood exploration, though Athens sprawls more than it appears. Taxis are cheap and useful for longer distances. Traffic is genuinely chaotic—avoid driving.

- Contemporary Athens continues positioning itself as a serious culinary destination, with innovative restaurants building on Greek foundations. The Psyrri and Gazi neighbourhoods continue gentrifying with galleries, studios, and new restaurants. Street art and alternative culture thrive. The city has shifted away from purely heritage tourism towards emphasising contemporary Greek culture and food.
Other neighborhoods in Athens
- Kolonaki — Upmarket neighbourhood with designer shopping, high-end restaurants, and embassies. The Acropolis Museum is here. Less bohemian than Psyrri but more refined and genuinely functional.
- Psiri — Former warehouse district now filled with bars, galleries, and restaurants. Peak atmosphere happens after midnight.
- Psyrri — Once-industrial neighbourhood that gentrified gradually and authentically. Street art, galleries, creative spaces, and neighbourhood restaurants now dominate. This is where contemporary Athens happens.
- Gazi — Similar trajectory to Psyrri, built around a former gasworks (now a cultural venue). Museums, galleries, restaurants, and bars make this genuinely interesting. Less polished than Psyrri but equally vital.
