Tim Ho Wan Formerly the world's cheapest Michelin-starred dim sum house — now a Bib Gourmand. The baked BBQ pork buns are still celestial, the queues still legendary.

Best time to visit: October to early December brings the most reliably clear skies and comfortable temperatures — the city at its most walkable. Spring arrives with warmth but also haze. Avoid July and August if you can: the typhoon season is manageable but the humidity is not.
Getting around: The MTR is one of the finest metro systems on earth — clean, air-conditioned, and rarely delayed. The double-decker trams on Hong Kong Island are slow but deliberate, and worth taking once just for the view. The Star Ferry between Central and Tsim Sha Tsui is both transport and ritual. Taxis are inexpensive by international standards and almost always available.

Current trends: The restaurant scene has accelerated since the reopening. The Chairman and Wing both claimed top positions at Asia's 50 Best Restaurants 2025, drawing global attention to Hong Kong's Cantonese revival. Sheung Wan and Sai Ying Pun continue to absorb new creative energy — independent wine bars, small Cantonese tasting menus, and design-forward cafes have replaced what were once largely residential streets. The M+ museum on the West Kowloon waterfront has repositioned the city as a serious contemporary art destination.

Central & SoHo — Gleaming towers meet escalator-connected bar streets. Where deals are done by day and unwound by night.
Sheung Wan — Dried seafood shops and temples neighbour coffee roasters and galleries. Old Hong Kong meets new.
Wan Chai — Once known for its nightlife reputation, Wan Chai has evolved into one of the city's most interesting food and culture districts. The Blue House cluster — a group of preserved shophouses — anchors a neighbourhood with genuine character.
Kennedy Town — The westernmost point of the MTR line, and a neighbourhood that has evolved quietly over the past decade into one of the city's most liveable enclaves. Good coffee, independent restaurants, and the harbour at the end of the road.
