Should I visit Venice as a day trip or stay overnight?

Stay overnight if you can. Day-trippers arrive 10 am and leave by 5 pm — the city's magic happens either side of that window. Even one night in Venice lets you see the empty morning and lantern-lit evening that make the trip worth taking.

Venice's day-tripper crowd is intense: the city receives more day-trippers than overnight guests, and San Marco is a scrum from 10 am to 4 pm. Overnight guests see the city empty at 8 am and again at 7 pm when the last groups leave — canals reflective, campos quiet, restaurants half-locals. Venice charges a day-tripper access fee on peak days (5–10 EUR) which overnight guests do not pay. Stay in Cannaregio or Dorsoduro for calmer bases than San Marco.
