The legal Schengen requirement (Regulation 2016/399) is a passport valid 3+ months beyond departure and issued in the last 10 years. But airlines are fined by Schengen states if they board a passenger denied at the border, so most check-in agents apply a 6-month buffer for safety. Renew if you are inside 6 months to avoid being turned away at check-in even when you are technically legal. UK passports issued before September 2018 sometimes carry extra months beyond 10 years — those extra months no longer count for Schengen entry.
