Are multi-city (open-jaw) flights cheaper than two one-ways?
Almost always. A single multi-city itinerary priced as one PNR often costs 20–40% less than two separately booked one-ways, and both segments are protected under one contract of carriage — so a delay on segment 1 is the airline's problem, not yours.
Airlines price multi-city itineraries under their normal round-trip fare rules, so an open-jaw (arrive Rome, depart Paris) is usually cheaper than two one-ways in each direction. The bigger win is protection: on one ticket, any missed connection or cancellation is the airline's obligation to rebook. On two tickets, the second airline treats you as a no-show. Use the 'multi-city' tab on Google Flights or the airline site directly; OTAs sometimes hide the option.
