How many days do I need in Tokyo on a first visit?

Seven full days is the practical minimum to cover the core neighbourhoods (Shibuya, Shinjuku, Asakusa, Ginza, Harajuku), one day-trip (Nikko or Kamakura), and enough downtime to actually enjoy the food scene. Under 5 days feels rushed; 10+ days lets you add Hakone, Yokohama, or Kyoto extensions.

Tokyo is huge — each ward has its own centre and its own character. A one-day-per-major-neighbourhood pace is realistic, plus a day for a day-trip (Nikko, Kamakura, or Hakone) and a rest day. Nine or ten days lets you fold in a Shinkansen extension to Kyoto (2 hours 15) or Osaka (2 hours 30) without cramming the return. If you have under 5 days, cut the day-trip and cluster the core wards along the Yamanote line. Suica or PASMO IC cards work on nearly all transit and are worth setting up on day one.
