Is Dubai worth a stopover on a long-haul flight?
For 24–48 hours yes, especially November to March when the weather works. The airport is 30 minutes from downtown, visa on arrival for most Western passports is instant, and premium hotels are cheap by European standards. Skip April to October — 40 °C+ heat makes an outdoor stopover miserable.
Dubai is engineered for stopovers. Emirates and Etihad offer free or cut-rate stopover hotel programmes with the through ticket. Visa-on-arrival is instant for US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia. 24 hours is enough for the Burj Khalifa, Old Dubai (creek and souks), and a beach dinner. 48 hours adds a desert-safari half-day. Winter (November–March) is 20–28 °C and comfortable; summer is genuinely dangerous heat and everything moves indoors. Alcohol only in licensed hotels/restaurants — plan accordingly.
