When should I visit Iceland for the northern lights?

September to March, on nights with a clear sky, low moonlight, and high geomagnetic activity (Kp 4+). October, February, and March are the sweet spots — long enough darkness for viewing without the deepest winter cold and closed roads. Book 3+ nights outside Reykjavík to give the aurora time to appear.

Aurora viewing needs three things at once: darkness, clear skies, and a solar substorm. Iceland has darkness from September to March. Clear skies are the wild card — Iceland is cloudy. Book 3+ nights minimum so one clear-sky night falls your way. Get out of Reykjavík's light pollution: Thingvellir, Hvammstangi, and Höfn are common bases. Check the Vedur.is aurora forecast (cloud + Kp index) daily. October, February, and March combine dark nights with drivable roads; December has the longest darkness but hardest weather.
