What is the best time of year to visit New York City?

Late April to mid-June and September to early November are the sweet spots — mild weather, active outdoor life, and hotel rates below the December–March holiday peak. Avoid August (humid and half the city on vacation) and the two weeks before Christmas (packed and expensive).

NYC has four distinct seasons that materially change the trip. Spring (mid-April to early June) is bright and mild, with parks in bloom and outdoor dining open. Autumn (September to early November) matches, with the added draw of leaf colour in Central Park. Summer (late June–August) is humid, garbage-scented, and largely empty of locals. December's Rockefeller tree and shop windows are magical but hotel prices double and streets are impassable — pick a January weekend for the same city at half the cost. Winter theatre and museums are excellent value.
