The 6th (Saint-Germain-des-Prés and Odéon) is the Left Bank classic — cafés, bookshops, walkable to the Musée d'Orsay and the Luxembourg Gardens. The 1st is unbeatable for pure sightseeing but empties at night. The 8th (Champs-Élysées) is expensive and generic; the 12th is quiet but off the main sightseeing lines. Outside the périphérique means real commutes to the centre.
