Where should I stay in Lisbon on a first visit?
Chiado for walkable central access and boutique hotels, Príncipe Real for design-forward stays with residential calm, or Alfama for atmospheric old-town charm at the cost of steep hills and thin transport. Avoid Parque das Nações unless you need airport access.
Chiado sits between the historic centre and the nightlife of Bairro Alto — five-minute walks to most sights and easy metro. Príncipe Real is quieter, greener, and full of independent shops and restaurants; a slower base for repeat visitors or design lovers. Alfama is postcard Lisbon but the labyrinth of steps and steep streets is punishing with luggage; pick a hotel near the tram 28 route. Belém is beautiful but too far out for a first trip. Parque das Nações is convenient for the airport and nothing else.
