Is there really a cheapest day of the week to book flights?
The day you book barely matters — the day you fly matters a lot. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday departures are typically 10–20% cheaper than Friday or Sunday. Book 1–3 months ahead for domestic and 2–8 months ahead for international, and avoid booking inside the last 14 days.
The 'book on Tuesday' rule is folklore from 2010s fare-loading schedules; airline revenue-management systems now reprice continuously, so the booking day is noise. What still holds:
1. Depart mid-week or Saturday. Business travellers fly Monday and Friday, and airlines price accordingly. 2. Book in the sweet spot. Hopper and Google Flights data both put domestic optimum at 21–60 days out and international at 60–120. Waiting past that shows the classic hockey-stick price ramp. 3. Use flexible-date grids, not exact-date search — a one-day shift often saves more than any coupon. 4. Set a price alert. Most fares move less than 10% in the first week you watch them; the alert is a floor-catcher, not a guarantee.
AVARA's disruption-aware search surfaces the mid-week alternative alongside your requested date so the cheaper flight is one tap away, not one search away.
