Is basic economy worth it, or should I always pay for standard economy?

Basic economy is worth it only for short daytime flights when you can travel with a personal item, do not need to pick a seat, and can afford to be rebooked last if the flight is disrupted. For anything longer than 3 hours, group travel, or connecting itineraries, pay the ~$30–$60 upgrade to standard.

Basic economy strips seat selection, carry-on (in the US on most carriers), same-day change rights, and priority in disruption rebooking. The seat, meal, and mileage accrual are the same as standard economy — the missing pieces are flexibility. For a nonstop 90-minute daytime hop it is fine. For a connecting international itinerary, basic economy is the ticket most likely to leave you stranded when a flight cancels, because rebooking priority is by fare class.
