How do I get the most value from frequent-flyer award bookings?

Book at the low mileage level as far in advance as the airline opens (330–355 days), stay flexible on airport pairs, use alliance partners for premium cabins, and always compare cash-plus-taxes value against a paid ticket — awards under 1.5 US cents per mile are usually not worth burning.

Airlines release award seats in waves: a batch at schedule open, another 90 days out, and a final 'zone' inside 2 weeks. Premium cabin availability is best via alliance partners (using Aeroplan to book Lufthansa first, for example) at fixed mileage tables. Value per mile is the yardstick — divide the cash price of the same seat by the miles required; below 1.5 cents you are burning miles cheaply. Watch for fuel surcharges on British Airways awards; they can exceed a cash discount ticket.
